The process and apparatus of this invention may be used in a variety of applications including the production of hydride fuel elements for nuclear reactors. The preferred method is to employ the process of this invention in the production of hydrogen for purposes of plant operation. In operation, the technique is to have molten potassium chloride and magnesium chloride separated in a tangential or other sloped plate heat exchanger, and to have a pump lift the molten potassium chloride and magnesium chloride into a tundish or directly into a mold for casting hydride fuel elements. The hydrogen required for plant operation is obtained from a hydride fuel cell or from steam reforming of hydrocarbons, and is piped from the tundish or mold directly to the fuel cell. Prior to the present invention, the hydrogen required for plant operation was obtained in the manner shown in FIG. 1 of U.S. Pat. No. 4,181,266. In that process, molten potassium chloride 1 is run through a heat exchanger, the heat of which is recovered by reboiler 2. In the reboiler 2, the molten potassium chloride is caused to rise under a pressure of at least 5 atmospheres to form molten potassium chloride 3 which is pumped to a tundish 5 by pump 4. In the tundish 5, the molten potassium chloride is mixed with molten magnesium chloride 6 to form hydride fuel. Upon solidification, the magnesium chloride 6 in the tundish 5 is retained therein by a plug 7. In the process of FIG. 1, a large portion of the potassium chloride 1 will solidify in the tundish 5. This causes mechanical problems, and a large heat of solidification is lost as a result of the large amount of potassium chloride that solidifies in the tundish. The pressure drop of pump 4 and the resistance of molten potassium chloride in the heat exchanger cause large energy losses. In addition, the molten potassium chloride that is not retained in the tundish 5 escapes into the environment.
